Job overview

Patient records need to be accurate, complete and released only to the right people. As a Remote Medical Records Specialist you will support the health information management (HIM) team by retrieving records, verifying authorizations, processing release of information (ROI) requests, maintaining records in the EHR and supporting records compliance.

No license and no prior healthcare or records experience is needed. Paid training covers HIM workflows, ROI, authorizations, redaction, EHR systems and HIPAA. Record types and scope depend on the team you join.

This opportunity may suit people searching for medical records jobs, remote medical records specialist jobs, work-from-home HIM jobs, or no experience healthcare jobs.

No Experience Required: We'll Train You

No license and no prior healthcare or records experience is required. Employers provide paid training on HIM workflows, ROI requests, authorization verification, redaction, EHR systems and HIPAA, and you learn the work step by step. Some employers may prefer an RHIT, RHIA or other HIM certification, so confirm in your interview.

Structured Remote Work with Predictable Hours

Records work runs on request queues and turnaround deadlines, usually weekday daytime, with no on-call and no in-person requirements. Both full-time and part-time positions are offered. Discuss your preferred schedule in your interview.

Non-clinical role, privacy and confidentiality first

This is an administrative role. It does not involve clinical decisions. You will handle detailed clinical information, so records are released only after authorizations are verified, and employers train you on HIPAA, state records laws and expect strict confidentiality in every disclosure.

What you'll do

  • Retrieve patient records from the EHR and other systems on request
  • Process patient, legal and payer release of information (ROI) requests
  • Verify patient and legal authorizations before releasing any records
  • Redact records per HIPAA and organizational policy
  • Support subpoenas, court orders and continuity of care requests
  • Maintain records accuracy and completeness in the EHR
  • Support chart tracking, deficiency review and closure
  • Support records retention and destruction workflows per policy
  • Support records audits and keep tracking logs accurate
  • Track ROI turnaround and other HIM metrics
